STK is a popular and trendy restaurant ‘chain’ in the US, and the London restaurant opened a few years ago at the trendy ‘ME’ London hotel by Melia. The restaurant is known for its good quality steaks, modern decor and music. It’s located on Aldwych by The Strand.

Having no experience of this restaurant, I ordered ‘medium’, hoping to actually get a medium steak. I’m pleased to say it was indeed cooked medium. The steak was cooked well, but wasn’t quite charred as much as I’d have liked – in part it was more brown than black. The texture (especially the top of the rib eye) was fantastic, albeit it wasn’t quite juicy as I would have liked.

The flavour of the steak was perfect. The waiter was keen to push the complimentary sauces, but I’ve no idea why when the steak tastes this good with no sauce. Despite my request for no sauce, there was a small amount on the side of the plate…

These fries were perfect and didn’t last long. They are crisp, thin, hot, and go perfectly with a nice steak! There’s also some parmesan truffle chips on the menu, which seemed a lot more popular. Given the size of these, and the uniform size, I’d avoid!

Our waiter was nice enough. I couldn’t quite keep track of who our waiter was as so many people came over to us. That said, I can’t really fault.

The decor is very modern, and the venue is actually a lot smaller than I expected it to be. Dim lighting with splashes of colour and white throughout, coupled with big tables, even for a party of two. I actually quite liked the decor on reflection, but it won’t be to everyone’s taste. Speaking of being to everyone’s taste, the music here definitely won’t be to everyone’s taste. When we arrived, the music was relatively quiet, but with the bass turned right up. When we left, the audio had also increased. I guess for the target audience, this will suit them well.

As this restaurant is quite small, and is part of a large hotel, the bathrooms are actually the ones in the main hotel lobby. Well, they’re not actually in the lobby but two very deep floors down in the basement! Given the nice bread they provide, I’m always amazed at restaurants with the bathroom so far away – do people tear the bread with their unwashed hands?!

Including a starter and main, this came to just over £140 for two including a bit of alcohol. A bit more than usual, but still pretty decent.

The mini burger starter was brilliant, and my companion really enjoyed the soft shell crab mini burger.

This was a fantastic meal – the starter and the main were both delicious and the fries the best I’ve had in a while. The decor is just about to my taste, but in my later years I’m not sure it will continue to be! If you’re relatively young, trendy, and like steak – this place is the venue for you! If you’re slightly older, go there and have the rib eye – your ears might not thank you, but your taste buds will!
