The Butlers Wharf Chop House is ran by the D&D London group, who run a range of top quality restaurants in London and further afield. With restaurants such as Coq d’Argent and Madison, would the Butlers Wharf Chop House on the south bank of the Thames be up there with the best?

I ordered by steak medium-rare (no idea whether this place cooks correctly or not), and I’m pleased to say it was nicely pink in the middle – just as I like it. The outside was lovely and charred with a nice dark brown (and black in places) colour. The texture of the steak was above average, but wasn’t quite as smooth as, say, Goodman or Hawksmoor. One thing’s for sure, the chef and equipment both aligned to get the most out of the lump of meat in front of me.

There was slightly more fat than usual, but it was nicely spread throughout the piece, which only added to the flavour. There was a relatively large ‘top of the rib’, which obviously gets a thumbs up from me as the tastiest part of the animal. I was unable to tell whether this was grain or grass fed, but either way you’re unlikely to be disappointed by the flavour.

These are “fat chips”, not fries. Unfortunately there were no fries on the menu. As “fat chips” go, they were fine. Probably the best “fat chips” can be.

Our waiter was nice – very attentive and the service was a level-above my regular steak-haunts. There was a nice white table cloth (strangely, only on some of the tables). The restaurant would have got full marks for service if it wasn’t for the strange welcome my party received from the bar man as we arrived. It wasn’t immidiately obvious to me where to “Check in”, so I asked the bar man, who said “I’ll check you in”, but he didn’t and we then saw some others go to the host stand (which was slightly hidden). Why the host stand isn’t at the restaurant entrance is completely beyond me.

[rating meta_key=”decor”]

This is a large restaurant, and it has nice decor. It’s a traditional warehouse style building on the south bank of the Thames, just along from Tower Bridge. I’m not entirely convinced the restaurant makes the most of the awesome riverfront location, but that said, the restaurant is classy and a welcoming place to be.

Food was decent value, but the the wines were a little more pricey than I think they should be for the quality.

This is a nice restaurant which I would recommend if you find yourself in the South Bank near Tower Bridge area. There seemed to be some nice non-steak options on the menu, so the non-steak eaters in your party should be happy enough.
