So here it is – the daddy of steak restaurants in London, and I’ll just come right out and say it – my absolute favourite. Not only does Hawksmoor always deliver the best steak in London, they also have awesome fries, awesome starters, awesome desserts, and generally awesome staff. How would I get on during this visit to Hawksmoor Guildhall, in the City?

Where to start – the steak, as ever, was cooked perfectly. I ordered medium-rare, and it was indeed a medium-rare steak I received. The texture? melt in the mouth perfect. It doesn’t get much better than this, folks. Could it be improved? I guess it could be charred slightly more on the outside.

Perfect meaty flavour. Just the right amount of fat. If you ordered sauce here, you’d be doing a disservice to your steak.

Hawsmoor have both “triple cooked” fries and “beef dripping” fries. Both are actually fries, both are delicious. You won’t go far wrong here with either option, but having said that – get the beef dripping!

I’d say around 4/5ths of the time the service at Hawksmoor is exceptional – very friendly, but not intrusive. During this visit, our server was great.

This Hawksmoor is in the basement, but is surprisingly brighter than the other branches I’ve been to. I’m not entirely convinced that’s a good thing, and I’d have to give the edge to Seven Dials or Air Street for decor. Having said that, the wood, brown leather and glass traditional decor is nice and I feel perfectly at home here.

Exceptional value for what you get. Starter, main, dessert, beers, service, the best rib eyes in London all for around £80 per head.

The potted beef starter is great, and I’m personally a fan of the crunchie bar for dessert, but I’ve had others and all have been great.
